Prior to SSI (Summer STEM Institute), I had limited exposure to scientific research and research projects. However, through SSI I was able to gain great insight into the world of academia and data science. I learned how to use Python/Machine Learning and Inferential Statistics to analyze datasets. At the same time, I also learned how to write Research Papers/Proposals and how to effectively create Research presentations.
Using what I had learned throughout the program, I started an independent research project. Advised by Adam Klie of UCSD’s Hannah Carter Lab, I investigated the METABRIC dataset to better predict the most effective treatment options depending on the type of breast cancer the patients have. It was incredibly eye-opening to formulate my own research questions and methodologies, and I plan on continuing this project for my last year of high school.
